How to Clean Your Gutters
Virtually everyone has to clean their gutters from time to time. While not a particularly fun or exciting task, cleaning your gutters is essential. When clogged with leaves, twigs, and other debris, your gutters cannot effectively channel water away from your home. Instead, the water will pool along your roofline, leading to costly problems down the road, such as foundation damage, landscape erosion, and basement flooding. Thankfully, cleaning your gutters is easy work and something you can do yourself. Here is how to clean your gutters.
To clean your gutters, you will need:
- A ladder
- A bucket
- Work gloves
- Safety glasses
- A garden hose
- Spray nozzle
- Scoop
Once you have your tools, secure the ladder on solid ground. Then, put on your gloves and safety glasses, and climb up the ladder. Now near your gutters, scoop up the debris into a bucket. If your gutters are particularly clogged, then you may need multiple buckets. Once the debris is removed, detach and clean the downspout strainers.
Next, fit your garden hose with the spray nozzle, and wash out your gutters with water, starting at the end opposite of the downspout. Once the gutters are clean, check the downspout. Turn the hose on full force, and spray down the spout. If there is a clog, then spray it out with the hose or use a plumber’s snake. You will need to do this cleaning twice a year—in the spring and in the fall—to make sure your gutters stay fully functional. And, make sure to check the forecast beforehand. You won’t want to clean your gutters on a rainy or snowy day.
