A Note From Our Founder – Kevin Shiner
We began roofing as a company in 1981. For me, it started one summer in my childhood. My father, Robert (Pete) Shiner, decided that with the help of my brother Peter and me, we could roof our own house.
But we were young and new to roofing, so what should’ve taken a couple of days took a week. By the time it was done, we’d all been bitten by the “roofing bug.”
Then, my father, being the kind soul he was, decided to help our neighbor John install a roof on his house.
And that started Shiner Roofing in McLean, Virginia.
By the end of that summer, while my dad was at his government job in Suburban Maryland, my brother and I, along with some other neighborhood friends, had installed ten roofs.
Of course, my father would check on quality and progress at the end of each day.
We loved it so much that we continued installing roofs throughout high school and during our college summers.
During college, I also started a marketing company. But, I combined what I learned from my father about improving homes with what I learned from marketing to go full force with Shiner Roofing in 1990.
Four Important Lessons From Dad
During the years my brother and I worked under my dad’s watchful eye, we learned quite a few things about roofing: the importance of quality products and detailed installations. But, more importantly, we learned how critical it is to respect YOU, our customer.

Treat Your Customers’ Home Like GOLD
Homes are where families are raised, holiday gatherings are held, and memories are made. Not only is it crucial to install a premium roof to protect your home, but it’s crucial to keep it clean and safe while doing so.
Keep Learning
As much as we want to say we know EVERYTHING, we don’t. But when an issue stumps us, we don’t “fake it till we make it”—we go back to the books, do our research, and learn how to do it the right way.
Value Of Hard Work
When we first started, we’d work from the crack of dawn until after sunset. If we had to finish a job, that’s what we did—we finished the job ON TIME. Though we’ve learned better time management since then, we still hold the value of hard work close to our hearts.
Honest Communication
Transparent communication with our customers is king at Shiner. If we make a mistake, we own it…and we make it right. No corners cut. No covered-up mistakes. Just honest, clear communication from start to finish.
